Thomas Heyward Jr., a signer of the Declaration of Independence, lived and died in Ridgeland, SC. A tomb was later built in his honor. Interstate 95 opened in the 1980’s and the Ridgeland area quickly developed. Main Street redeveloped in the 1990’s with new sidewalks, palm trees and street lights.
