Ridgeland Real Estate Owners Enjoy Old-Fashioned Lowcountry Town

Ridgeland, SC, is a an old fashioned Lowcountry town just 30 miles from Savannah, GA and 30 miles from Hilton Head Island, SC. With temperatures averaging 40 degrees in January and 80 degrees in July, this rapidly growing town of 2700 residents has a laid back atmosphere with an unforgettable southern charm.

Once known as “Gopher Hill, due to the “gopher tortoise” that frequently roamed the area, Ridgeland changed its name in 1902. Native Americans once dominated the Ridgeland, SC, area until they were pushed out by the Europeans. During the Civil War, General Sherman destroyed much of Ridgeland, leaving only a few buildings left standing.

Thomas Heyward Jr., a signer of the Declaration of Independence, lived and died in Ridgeland, SC. A tomb was later built in his honor. Interstate 95 opened in the 1980’s and the Ridgeland area quickly developed. Main Street redeveloped in the 1990’s with new sidewalks, palm trees and street lights. Locals anticipate numerous festivals, parades and celebrations, like the annual Gopher Hill Festival in October.

Ridgeland, South Carolina, is a quaint Lowcountry town with a thriving downtown area, unique shopping and historical markers. The Thomas Heyward Jr. tomb is across from White Hall Plantation where Heyward once resided. You’ll find locals and Ridgeland real estate owners strolling along the charming downtown filled with shops, restaurants and businesses. Close by at Point South are outlet shopping malls and restaurants.

Spared by General Sherman during the Civil War, this church was once headquarters for Federal troops. Methodist, Baptist, Catholic, Episcopal, and Non-Denominational churches are locally located.

Several hospitals are close by including the Coastal Carolina Medical Center in Hardeeville, Candler Hospital in Savannah and the Hilton Head Regional Medical Center. Higher Educational opportunities are minutes away from Ridgeland, including The University of South Carolina-Beaufort South campus in Bluffton, The Technical College of the Lowcountry, and The Savannah College of Art and Design.

From Lowcountry style mansions to new modern homes, numerous housing options are abound in the Ridgeland real estate market. Ridgeland's real estate market is hot due to the increasing interest in living in the Lowcountry.
